Expectations

People arrive for a session for many different reasons and with many different expectations.

It could be that massage or reflexology was recommended by a friend who had experienced it. If this is so, you will be forever grateful.

Or, maybe you were lucky and received a gift certificate. You are in for a treat. It is an inexpensive, caring gift to give.

Maybe you simply want to pamper yourself. Whatever your reason, you will enjoy a great experience. The benefits often continue long after the treatment is complete.

Regardless of what brought you, your treatment will start with a discussion about your health, your expectations and your experiences with massage and/or reflexology. If you are coming for reflexology, you will receive a soothing, warm footbath to begin the relaxation process. This bath, containing mineral salts, will begin to warm and soften your feet. Following that, the reflexology treatment will be done while you recline in a wonderful chair used by many reflexologists. If you are coming for massage, you will enjoy the comfort of a fleece covered and warmed massage table. Quiet music will play in the background.

Typical reactions to reflexology are that it is:
  • Relaxed
  • Energized
  • Soothed
  • Centered
  • Refreshed

Forms

The health history form is used to understand your background and any concerns you have. You will have an opportunity to discuss this information with Sue prior to beginning treatment. These forms are only needed at your first visit; however, on subsequent visits, she will review your health with you. This helps her to stay abreast of any new issues that may arise. It also helps her to understand how you reacted to your prior treatment.

The client consent form is simply giving permission to conduct sessions. In addition, it details some other less common reactions that sometimes occur as a result of treatment.

Frequently Answered Questions

How long is a session?

Massage sessions are either 75 or 90 minutes and a reflexology session is one hour long. Suething Touch also offers a 90-minute combination of reflexology and massage. This usually involves 20-30 minutes of reflexology followed by massage.

How much does it cost?

Please see our services and pricing page.

What is massage?
Massage has many different forms from Swedish to Rolfing to myofascial release to deep tissue. It is basically the use of manual techniques to manipulate soft tissue with the intention of affecting the health of the client. Lotions and oils may be used.

What type of massage will I receive at Suething Touch?
Sue practices an eclectic mix of techniques based primarily on her training in Swedish massage, but incorporating deep tissue, acupressure, hydrotherapy, hot stones, paraffin and reflexology techniques as well. She orients each session toward the client's preferences and needs, touching base throughout the session to ensure that the client receives maximum benefit and satisfaction.

What if I don't like the work?
Sue stands by her work and will offer a full refund to anyone who is not satisfied.

Are there any requirements for massage therapists?
Yes, North Carolina currently requires completion of a 500-hour curriculum in an approved school, passing scores on the national certification exam and an accepted license application.

How do I know if my massage therapist has followed NC law?
Any massage therapist practicing in the state of NC has to use the words Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist (or the designation LMBT) after their name and include their NC license number.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is the use of touch on the feet, hands and ears. The benefits of stimulating the feet for healing purposes have been recognized since the 1500s.

Did you know that each foot contains 26 bones and each hand contains 27? That is more than half the bones in the body! The foot has over 7200 nerve endings. Reflexology maps body parts such as the major organs, lymph system, spine and sinuses to different points on the foot, hand and ear. Through reflexology we stimulate these points, positively affecting the corresponding body part.

For example, when you treat the tips and pads of the toes there is a related effect on the sinuses, and treating the whole foot can have a relaxing and healing effect on the whole body. As a result, after a reflexology treatment, not only will your feet feel absolutely fabulous, but you will also have sense of well-being all over. That is why if you love your feet, your body will love you back. And, it just feels good!

Reflexology has been said to reduce stress and thereby promote well-being. Although reflexology does not diagnose or treat specific ailments, many recipients have found that it may ease pain or discomfort found in the body.

How is reflexology different from massage?

Reflexology is a non-circulatory manipulation of the hands, feet and ears. Massage is considered circulatory bodywork, meaning that it improves circulation.

Does it tickle?

The majority of clients find reflexology relaxing, stimulating and energizing. Most people, regardless of how ticklish they are, do not find it ticklish.

How long is a reflexology session?

A session is one hour long. After a brief wellness update and footbath, the various points on the feet are manipulated.

What is Suething Touch®?

Suething Touch is a small NC wellness service owned and operated by Sue Austin. She currently practices reflexology exclusively, focusing on the feet.

What do clients think of Suething Touch?

Sue Austin's hands are magical...whether used for reflexology or a full body massage. Her passion for maximizing one's health in mind, body and spirit is evident from the moment she puts her suething touch to work. I have had massages on a regular basis for 30 years and she is the best....period!
~ 50-year-old female

I had been using chiropractic therapy for years to help with chronic lower back pain. While the adjustments provided temporary relief, the pain always returned. Receiving monthly deep tissue massage has relieved the tension and tightness in all my muscles and has provided lasting relief. I haven't felt this good in years.
~ 61-year-old male

I've had many massages from Sue and each one seemed better than the last. I attribute this to Sue's ability to constantly learn more about her client's body and how it responds to massage.
~ 58-year old female

Sue has an innate ability to quickly and effectively identify problem areas. That gift, coupled with the knowledge and skills she has developed in working to relieve those issues, are just a few of the things that make Sue a great therapist!
